The Importance of Upholstery Cleaning With Todays ' Fabrics

Everything in a home needs to be maintained and upholstery furniture is no different. Dirt and germs build up on furniture and are generally present even if stains are not visible. Different factors need to be assessed when it comes to cleaning specific pieces of furniture. The most important criteria to be considered is the fabric type. Some fabrics must be dry cleaned, for example; silk and velvet. Other types of fabrics can be steam cleaned.

To help determine the type of cleaning required upholstery furniture they are tagged with a label that includes a one or two letter code, some examples of the codes used are "s", "w" or an "s/w". If a piece of furniture is not coded it may be safe to assume that it must be dry cleaned.

Steam Cleaner

Fabrics labeled with an "s" need to be cleaned with a solvent but should almost always be dry cleaned. Those labeled with the code "w" can be wet cleaned; either through shampoo or steam cleaner and those that are marked with "s/w" can be cleaned by either method.

Though fabrics are labeled, special care is extremely important and it is highly advisable to always hire a professional. Even the fabrics that can be successfully cleaned using a do it yourself method may be more difficult than a consumer imagines and if the cleaning is done incorrectly, the piece will never look the same and replacement may be necessary.

A reputable technician is trained specifically in upholstery cleaning and will not only know how to clean furniture correctly but also will work with you to ensure affordable rates. Though a companymay be able to estimate the cost of cleaning over the phone, the specific fee will not be able to be determined until the technician has the chance to look at the piece of furniture. No matter what the cost, it is important to consider the price of cleaning in comparison to the cost of replacing the piece if a self-cleaning method does not produce good results.

Most professionals will elect to steam clean upholstery with hot water and detergent because the results of this cleaning method are generally better than with dry cleaning with a solvent. A trained technician will spot-test the furniture to determine pricing and to ensure that the method they chose will not cause any undo damage.

Though furniture is labeled and there are many "do-it-yourself" methods, it is importantto state once again that a professional cleaning service is highly recommended to obtain desired results.
